Expensive plumbing on the human body.
They remove diseased tissue (called excision; think: remove a cancer), repair damaged tissues (like bullet holes, childhood squint) and add things to help (like transplants or titanium pins for broken bones), all while trying to keep as much of your insides actually inside you.

Surgeons are responsible for fixing and repairing things that are wrong on the inside of your body. They work with guys and organs to try to stitch them up and get them working properly again. Surgeons come in lots of different specialisms, you can be an orthopedic surgeon who fixes bones, a vascular surgeon who repairs blood vessels, a general surgeon who does a bit of anything and everything, a trauma surgeon who deals with big injuries like stab wounds and gunshots or a neurosurgeon who operates on the brain!
