      It gives you a chemical burn, the same as an acid.

      Alkali burns tend be caused by lye, lime or ammonia. Cleaning products can tend to be very strong alkali that cause very serious burns. Sparks from sparklers are also classed as alkali burns interestingly! It’s important to seek medical attention immediately because the necrosis (cell death) carries on and can be very serious as well as very painful!
