I am not science educated. I left school 30 years ago with a low Chemistry qualification and muddled through life not using much.
Now I work at a university in the Chemistry department, it’s really awakened my science passion.
I no longer what to have no qualifications and amongst many other courses, I’m currently studying for a Diploma in Laboratory Safety Level 4.
Wish me luck.
For my undergraduate dissertation I investigated different ways of determining carboxyhaemoglobin levels in blood (carbon monoxide poisoning) and how effective my local mortuary’s method of storing blood was, i.e. how much carbon monoxide might have diffused out of the stored blood, into the air within the container, and therefore altered the results.
My PhD research is based on the forensic analysis of cosmetic foundation samples and whether or not this type of trace evidence could be differentiated using spectroscopic techniques and chemometrics. The hope is this method can be integrated into forensic practice at some point in the future and add another dimension to trace evidence analysis! 🙂
