• Question: how do you feel when you help people and save lives because I would be pleased but also quite upset as what they have been through might have been tough?

You’re totally right. It’s really upsetting seeing people in pain or when they have terminal illnesses which means they will die of them at some point. Seeing friends and family cry because they are worried about the patient is really sad and sometimes I cry too. Some of our patients are so strong and when they get to leave us to either go to a ward or go home then this is an amazing feeling! The good feelings are why we carry on doing what we do, knowing that we can help the majority is worth every sad moment we have to get through. The main thing is that it’s okay to be sad and upset, it’s important to talk about grief, death and your feelings around this.
