Black holes form when a very big star (at least 5 times the mass of our Sun) die. Once a star gets old and cannot burn any longer, it collapses very rapidly into a very tiny ball because of gravity. This collapse creates a huge explosion we call the supernova. The remaining tiny ball is so dense that its gravity is so strong that light cannot move away from it. This tiny ball is what we call a black hole.
